Thief Gold no longer work on any of my XP boxes

Has anyone else had thief gold quit working on XP? It used to work fine,
but I think a windows update may have broke it. Now I get the message
"Thief.exe has experienced an error and needs to close." When I tried to
re-install it from scratch (no patches), I can get to the menu and options
screens, but when I try to start a new game, I just get a black screen and
have to end it with ctrl-alt-delete.

Any suggestions?

I had exactly the same symptoms until I reinstalled the game to fresh folder. Game worked again - once... I figured out that the Thief 1 writes to "cam.cfg" line "skip_intro". So for some reason removing this from that file the game works!!

I'm using:
Windows XP SP2
Nvidia 8800GTS - with drivers ver 169.21
Aureon 5.1 Sound Card
AMD Athlon 2100XP (single core cpu)
DirectX 9.0c (Nov 2007)
Game installed on FAT partition

I get time to time "Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage" error but it's so rare that I have not done anything to get rid of that...
