Hello long time lurker first time poster and am a complete noob i need to make a decision as I want a good laptop

Whats the difference between the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 and 4870? and can someone explain to me what all that means? as I am getting a new system and I've been told that the 4870 is better, but couldn't be told why? or how?

Well im looking at a SXPS 1645(4670)~$2800 or an M17x with a single card(4870) ~$3100
all other specs will be the same
i7-720qm
6 gigs ddr3 1333mhz
256 gb SSD

I found this at Notebookreview.net

ati 4870
Manufacturer ATI
Series Mobility Radeon HD 4000
Codename M98-XT
Pipelines 800 - unified
Core Speed * 550 MHz
Shader Speed * 550 MHz
Memory Speed * 888 MHz
Memory Bus Width 256 Bit
Memory Type GDDR5
Max. Amount of Memory 1024 MB
Shared Memory no
DirectX DirectX 10.1, Shader 4.1
Transistors 956 Million
technology 55 nm

ati 4670

Manufacturer ATI
Series Mobility Radeon HD 4000
Codename M96-XT
Pipelines 320 - unified
Core Speed * 675 MHz
Shader Speed * 675 MHz
Memory Speed * 800 MHz
Memory Bus Width 128 Bit
Memory Type GDDR3, DDR2, DDR3
Max. Amount of Memory
Shared Memory no
DirectX DirectX 10.1, Shader 4.1
Current Consumption 35 Watt
Transistors 514 Million
technology 55 nm

I dont know what any of that means and I'm also pretty confused as notebookcheck.net has the 4870 ranked #9 and the 4670 is ranked # 43 but the FPS results in games are higher on the 4670?

Hello and welcome to the forums :)
HD 4870M performs way better than HD 4670M,.
I just checked notebookcheck and yes you are right,in some games it reports that 4670 performs better which is wrong.
But you can google for XPS 16 and AWM17x laptop and you will see in benchmarks that 4870M is significantly faster than a 4670M

If you'll notice the "Pipelines" spec, that refers to the number of unified shaders the GPU has. The 4870m has more than twice as many. 4870m is the more powerful of the two.

I'm just curious why two ~$3000 laptops are still using the last generation of mobile GPUs... I've seen ASUS G-Series Gamer laptops in the $1600 range using 5870m GPUs. Pretty much the same specs across the entire board as these two, other than the SSD.

Sure, it's ASUS and not Dell/Alienware, but damn... We're talking $1000 difference for pretty similar hardware, and the ASUS has the newest GPU. The Alienware website says,
Quote:
Max out your game settings with the latest and most powerful ATI CrossFireX graphics processors, offering up to one teraFLOP of sheer graphics power for the ultimate gaming experience."
That's not entirely accurate now, is it? Worse still is they specifically mention CrossFireX, but then don't even offer that option in the configuration.

Also, why 6GB of RAM on a Dual-Channel CPU IMC? (integrated memory controller) 4GB or 8GB in Dual-channel mode makes more sense to me.

For comparison, Newegg sells a similar ASUS laptop with a 5870m:

I dunno... Buy what makes you happy, Mkelliny. I'm just kinda in awe of the price difference of such similar hardware, and Alienware's inaccurate claims.

I know its to hard find with 1 HD 4870M,but thinks of 4870M as a graphic card which performs between Desktop 4830 and 4850 and 4670M performs like a desktop 4650,and if you search for their benchmarks you will see that 4870M performs noticeably better

I appreciate all of your answers and Yes RazberyBandit. I totally agree, but you can configure it with crossfire (atleast when I configured mine i seen the option for 300 more) I really wish I could just put this money into a desktop, but I travel alot for business, so more searching to do now as I want to check out the ASUS that RazberyBandit suggested

I know someone with a G71 (last year's model) and it's more powerful than her desktop machine. It's funny to see her sit on the couch or in bed and game on it instead of using her desktop.

There are other ways to go, and I'm not saying Dell/Alienware is bad by any stretch. I just think you might find better value elsewhere.

Well don't rush off to do it... Research it a little. Be sure. I hate to see people rush into things when I just site one example. Makes me worry they'll curse my name if it's not everything they hoped for and more. :)
