Upgrade or New?

Hey Guys
I was thinking about building a new pc and these are the components:

Asus MB P5E3 PRO; LGA775, Intel X48
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66GHz
WD Caviar 640 GB; WD6400AAKS; 16MB SATA2
Antec kućište NINE HUNDRED-EU, Tower
LG DVD/RW GH22LS50 Black SATA LightScribe
Asonic C-Media USB 8 channel
Kingston 2048MB 1333MHz DDRIII PC10666
GIGABYTE 720W, SUPERB Power 24EPG-P61AC2 power supply

Or upgradeing my current system:

MSi Neo LGA775, Intel P35
Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.40 GHz
WD 250 GB sata1 hard drive
Sapphire Raddeon HD 3650 512 MB DDRII
Kingston 1Gb DDRII 400MHz RAM X2
MSI 550W power suply

With these components:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66GHz
Kingston 1Gb DDRII 400MHz RAM X2

Keep in mind that I'm on a budget and can't afford much better components than this.
I'd like your advice on any better configurations or components and should I just upgrade my current system or built a new one?

  1. If you're going to build a new system, don't build it around the dead LGA 775 socket. An AMD AM3 build would offer much better performance and a better upgrade path. Of course you haven't really given us enough information to give you a good recommendation. What do you use the system for? If you play games, what resolution does your monitor run at and what games do you play? Where will you be purchasing your components?
  2. Sorry, but I'm new. I'd use my system mostly for browsing web, multitasking and gaming now and then. Resolution on my current monitor is 1280x1024 but I might be upgrading it to 1920x1200 or dual display with 1280x1024 resolution. Since I live in Bosnia witch I think is a country you probably don't know I'd be buying my components from: http://www.mp.imtec.ba/WelcomeMal.aspx witch might be useful or not.

PS. I play fps and strategy games the most.
  3. I agree. An AM3 build leaves more options open in the future, plus you can probably build a rig for less going down this route. The Phenom II 955 is $10 less than the Q8400 to begin with.

What kind of budget are you looking at?
  4. I can't tell you what budget I'm on exactly but around 800$ or 1000KM. And do you have any suggestions for upgrading my current system?
  5. Given your budget, the components you've listed in the original post are probably your best bet if you just want to upgrade.
  6. I've just found out that Q8300 costs oround 40$ less at my location and was woundaring is it better to get Q8400 or Q8300 and just overclockit a bit?
  7. Definitely, go for the 8300 then.
