Replacement Gamming System MAX $1000

In fall of 2008 I purchased/Built my last computer; but, due to a robbery at my home, it has been stolen. I am looking to replace this system and could use some recommendations on part selection. I've been out of the game for a while, and have only kept up loosely on the best bang for the buck processor / mobo combos.

I am starting from scratch since the burglars stole everything, and am just looking for advice on the tower. I can take care of the peripherals / OS my self.

I've provided details on my old system below, and am looking to replace with an equivalent or something slightly better.

Component Manufacture Model Original Price
Processor Intel C2Q Q6600 2.4G 775 65N $185
Motherboard Gigibyte GA-EP45-DS3L 775 P45 RT $108
RAM (4GB) OCZ DII800 OCZ2RPR800C44GK $100
Harddrive Western Digital WD 7K 16M WD6400AAKS $85
Case Coolmaster 600 RC $70
Power Supply Corsair 550W $70
Video Card Visiontek HD4870 512M RT $273
Optical Drive Samsung SH-S223Q/BEBN LS $29
CPU Cooler Xigmatek HDT-S1283 / ACK-17751R $44

Primary Use: Gamming
Budget: $1000 MAX (This is set in stone)

I'd prefer a single card configuration, unless a better value with equivalent or better performance can be found. I'd appreciate any advice / insights you can provide. In addition, always been an AMD fan myself, but am willing to compromise if a better value is found.

PS: What’s your opinion on the current price outlook for graphics cards. Do you think they will come down much over the rest of the month.
