8.00 GB (4.00 GB usable)

I have a GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3 motherboard with 4 ddr3 slots. I originally placed 2X2GB Gold Series XTC Cooler 4GB DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) memory. Than earlier today I bought 4 gb more of Extreme Performance Sector 5 G Series 4GB DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) Enhanced Latency Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit (Two 2GB Memory Modules). When I started up my computer and went to system, it came up with the message 8.00 GB (4.00 GB usable). Is it possible to use all 8gb, or should i just return them

Make sure you're running a 64-bit operating system. A 32-bit OS will not access more than roughly 3.5gb to 4gb RAM.

Though as of Vista SP2 and Win7, it will report 4Gb now and not report what's actually usable. Too many people complaining so MS just decided to show 4Gb. Definitely running a 32bit O/S, though - agreed.

I am running a 64-bit version of windows 7, so that's not the problem

Have you tried moving your memory around. Like the 2X2GB Gold Series XTC Cooler 4GB in the blue slots on the mobo and Extreme Performance Sector 5 G Series 4GB in the white slots and vice versa?

sometimes you have to flip a switch in BIOS called something like "Memory Hole at 15m - 16m" or something like that. Check for that and try it.

also joycerp is right, the larger capacity should be in slots a1 and b1, and the smaller in a2 and b2.
