If the desktop CPU isn't overclocked, it'll actually hold its own against an i7-930 quite well except in heavily threaded tasks, primarily due to a very aggressive turbo. Worst case, it should still perform on par with the i5-750.

Its a slightly faster version of the 920XM which is slightly slower than the desktop i5 750 so I would think the 940XM performance would be around the same as a stock i5 750. There should be some benchmarks around soon to find a more conclusive answer but I can't see it being far off.

Nope, it's actually fairly common for a $600 desktop to easily out perform a $1000 laptop. The price difference only grows once you factor in gaming. Mobile cpu's and gpu's are always weaker lower clocked versions of their desktop counter parts to reduce power consumption and heat.

I am currently deciding between a 940xm laptop and a portable desktop (clevo 7200 with a i7 950) so I gathered some data from Toms benchmarks. I could only find benches for the 920xm, the 940xm is very similar, only a few % difference, basically anything multi-threaded the 950 trounces it, even the 930 is 40%+ faster than the 920xm, but anything single threaded, and the 920xm is 30% faster than a desktop 950, and 10% faster than a i7-975 Extreme.
