I'm at wit's end. Before I start, please understand that I have been using
Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance since XP Pro was released with very
little problem, so in general, I know what I'm doing.

While I was home visiting my parents over Christmas, I installed Norton
Systemworks Premier 2005 on their computer that I have been administrating
remotely through Remote Desktop for the past year. (SP2 had already been
installed on the computer and I had been able to access the computer
remotely with no problem.) However, I noticed that after the install of
Systemworks, the XP Security Center service would not start. If I went to
the Services snap-in and tried to manually start it, I received the message:

Could not start the Security Center service on local computer. Error 1075:
The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

Once I left my parents home to return to my own home across the country, I
tried to remotely access the computer and couldn't do it. I got my parents
on the phone and on the computer under my administrative account, we walked
through several things. First, we stopped the Norton Firewall (or as it's
called Internet Worm Protection) permanently until I solve this access
problem. The Windows Firewall is disabled because Secuirty Center doesn't
start and can not be started. So the firewall part of the equation should be
removed. I've had them check that the System Properties has both Remote
Desktop and Remote Assistance checked. The Remote Desktop services seems to
be started under the Services snap-in. The router still is forwarding port
3389 as before to the correct local IP address of the computer. (As I said,
everything was working fine before this Systemworks install.) I also got
them to send me a Remote Assistance to see if I could access it that way,
but it just timesout and fails while they wait to receive my request at the
other end.

Since I have been accessing this computer for a year through XP Pro remote
services, I have to conclude that the Systemworks 2005 install did something
to screw up the native XP Security Center and that in turn prevents Remote
Desktop and Remote Assistance listeners from working properly. I've searched
Google for some insight and seen none on this problem. Any help to solve
this problem will be greatly appreciated; otherwise, I'll have to get on a
plane and go cross-country to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance.

PS. The computer otherwise is working well, but I must maintain this
computer remotely for my parents.

I'm having the exact same problem with remote desktop, i tried
contacting symantec but ended up getting thier Indian "out-sourced
support", it was total waste of time and money. I explained to them in
datail and this is what they sent me
http://service1.symantec.com/support/nav.nsf/docid/2003...
They have no idea, nothing to do with my problem.
I will be looking elsewere for antivirus next year.
