Win xp unable to format hard disk
I am giving computer away and want to format hard drive. I get "unable to format" using XP.
You can't format the Windows partition from within Windows, for obvious reasons. You have to boot the PC from a bootable DOS CD which contains the DOS formatting utility.
If you have a factory recovery disc it's best to use that as it will install a fresh copy of Windows whilst at the same time wiping off everything that's currently on the drive.
If instead you simply format the drive, the next owner will somehow have to try and get a copy of Windows XP to put on it before it can be used, and getting hold of a legal and working XP disc these days is not easy.
