Alright guys I'm at the point where I'm weighing the cost and time to build a new computer or just buy a new one. Here's what I have so far

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Within the next week weeks

BUDGET RANGE: 700-1000 USD

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: surfing the internet, music, gaming (starcraft 2, call of duty mw2, etc)

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: just the computer

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg. I'd prefer to try and buy everything from one site if at all possible

PARTS PREFERENCES: I'm planning on a Intel CPU (probably an i7) and either an Asus or Gigabyte motherboard

OVERCLOCKING: most likely not OR CROSSFIRE: most likely not

For a motherboard, Ive been looking at the Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 and the Intel i7-860 for CPU. For a video card I've heard good things about the Radeon 5770 as a mid-range card.

I'm open to any suggestions at all.

What resolution do plan on gaming at?

Also, since you're not doing anything CPU taxing, I'd go with an AMD build or an i5 750 build. It'll play games just as well as any i7 build for less.

With the money saved, you could invest it into a good GPU.
