I have a Compaq laptop with a defective hard drive which Compaq is replacing
under warranty. They are shipping me the new hard drive and expect me to
install it (with their help). Is this a very difficult procedure? I am
relatively knowledgeable with computers and have replace drives in desktop
units, no problem. I was under the impression that laptops are a whole
different ball game though.

I don't own a Compaq, but a HD usually involves one or two screws, maybe a
bit of "isolation material" unplugging it, plugging in the new one and
replacing the screws... There is likely a 4cm X 5cm door on the underside
of your computer.. behind that will be the HD.
Funny thing about some laptops (IBM in particular).. but the shop manuals
are available and many people take them to bits quite regularly.. You would
think it would be like having a go at your cell phone... but it's much
easier than that.

Thanks.

It's VERY difficult on some models, very easy on others.
If they are sending you a drive for you to replace, then on your model I
would presume that it's easy.

It's usually one screw and the whole assembly slides out. You'll plug
in a new assembly and send the old one back to them. Pretty trivial.
[Hope your backups are good, and if possible, erase the old hard drive
before you send it back, as you don't know where it'll end up with
whatever data might be recoverable from it.]

When mine hard drive got fried they paid shipment both ways. I'm surprised
they are having you doing it under warranty. What if you break something
while trying to replace the disk, is that under warranty too? It maybe a
simple procedure where you just remove a plastic piece and slide it out.
On mine you need a #8 trox screwdriver. Remove the palm rest, and perhaps
the keyboard too and various pieces before you get to the drive while
takeing note of which screw goes where. During the mean time trying to
access the drive, and if you're not careful you could do more damage than
good. Once you've done it once its pretty straight forward but the first
time could be a bitch.
