AMD Phenom 945 x4 bottlenecks?

Hi, I just got the Episodes from liberty city game (GTA IV expansions). I decided to see what kind of performance I got with max settings and after it was done I went to compare my results with other people on the net.

I then found a guy who averaged 40 fps on the same benchmark I ran, he was running an i7 @ 4GHz, and if you compare that with what I got, 25 fps, something's not right. I doublechecked to see he was running the same settings, resolution, etc.

So, could this be the cause of a bottleneck? My Phenom 945 x4 is bottlenecking my 5870?

The CPU usage during the benchmark was just 70% though, so it wasn't running at full power, and therefore shouldnt be bottlenecking, or? The GPU wasn't running at full either, I belive it ran at about 60%~ usage. The graphics memory usage was at 95%.

I also noticed one guy had commented, he said that he was running a Q9550 at 3,4GHz, and he averaged 20-30 fps, so he got about the same performance.

ps: my Phenom 945 is running at 3,4GHz

Any help or thoughts are appreciated!

Joe

Does your 5870 and the one your comparing it to both have the same amount of Vram? Also what resolution are you playing at? At lower resolutions I would expect I5/I7 to pull ahead of a Phenom II X4, most of the benchmarks where Phenom II keeps up are high resolution gaming where the gpu is the bottleneck.

I have crucial DDR3 1333mhz ram, and the guy with the i7 was running at same settings, same resolution as me. And we had the same amount of video memory.

Huh. Thats weird cause i have a 955 at stock 3.2 Ghz and i run GTA IV at avg 50fps. It could be cause of my gtx 295 but a 5870 is still a very powerful card. What resolution were you running the bench at? Oh and i meant 50FPS avg during real gameplay.

I always run at 1920x1080, the benchmark is pretty intense though, with a helicopter flying around blowing up cars n stuff in a street, my fps ingame while driving around and stuff is much higher, and I put everything to the max on the benchmark, just for the sake of benching. Otherwise I'm fine with playing on settings a bit below maxed.

Hmmm. I seriously doubt your 945 is bottlenecking your 5870 though. And i didnt notice the part where you said the i7 was at 4 Ghz. That could explain alot. :)

Yeah, I guess the i7 is so much more powerful than the phenom 945, specially when it's running at 4GHz in GTA.. the most cpu demanding game
