A week ago I had a problem with my Fujitsu Lifebook 2210 not booting up. It
turned out that the 512MB add-on memory module was bad. A couple of days
ago I replaced the memory with a module that I bought from Crucial.

The memory itself was installed with no problem, but while installing the
memory -- which sits underneath the keyboard -- I pulled the keyboard's
ribbon cable out of its connection on the motherboard. It looks like it
just slips into a connection on the motherboard, but when I try to slip it
in and boot up, only a few of the keys work.

I can use the notebook computer with an external keyboard, but I would like
to have the keyboard work, because the external keyboard isn't any help in
making changes in the BIOS (if necessary).

My one-year warranty has expired, and Fujitsu says I will have to pay for
the repair -- which they say costs $220 for a keyboard replacement to $500+
for replacing the motherboard.

Does anyone have another, less costly solution? Can anyone tell me how the
keyboard ribbon cable attaches to the motherboard?

George

You may not have inserted the ribbon all the way in. Look very carefully at
the connector block on the motherboard. It may have some sort of latch that
you need to pullout before you could insert or remove the ribbon.

If you already broke the ribbon you may be able to get a cheap replacement
and not buy the whole keyboard assuming if there is a disconnect on the
keyboard end.

The Keyboard Connectors in Laptops look like they were solid, but
usually consist of two parts. One with the pins attached to the
motherboard, and a second part which can be pulled upwards about one
millimeter. That should be done with fingers and fingernails.
Carefully pull on the white Plastic you can reach with your fingers,
the other, fixed part, is covered anyway. It's as hard to pull as
desktop computer harddisk connector (In relation to the different
size).
You have to keep it open with one hand while you put in the cable with
the other.

I like these connectors, they show what can be done with plastic to
get small electronic machines.

Thanks for your help. I was not able to open up the keyboard cable
connector, but I found 2 little (very little) tabs that hold the cable in
the connector. Once I placed the cable into the connector and closed the
two little tabs, the keyboard once again worked as it should.

Is there a good way to clean/replace fujitsu keyboards? I managed to
spill beer on my n3010 and a few of the keys no longer work. Can I pry
the keys off or are they permanent? Is there any recommended repair
place?
