Cores or Speed

Hi,

whats more important for gaming, Cores or Speed?

Thanks

More about cores speed
  1. A nice mix of both, a decently quick triple core is about all you need. Once you have 4 cores adding more wont help gaming performance so its speed from that point but you eventually hit a point where even OCing a CPU more wont help because the GPU is the component limiting the performance.
  2. Triple core is really the sweat spot for gaming right now, shows large gains over a dual core in most newer games even when clocked lower. A quad will show additional gain in some games, but it won't be a large gain, and more cores than that simply aren't used right now.

    Thanks :D

I have been looking at a AMD athlon ii x3 425 @ 2.7ghz, any recommendation on CPUs?
  4. Actually that is a good budget CPU, get yourself a decent CPU cooler, a nice overclock, and you have yourself a very capable CPU for gaming.
  5. considering for 4$ you can get the 440, which is already at 3 GHz, and a new stepping i believe, id go for that. its likely the best cpu for the money there is:

some people report it unlocking into a quad core, like the 640, a few amount report it unlocking into a quad core and having l3 cache, making it a B45. considering its a very fast cpu on its own, the unlocking is a plus, but it really doesnt need it. and typically in games, speed is much more important than cores, but that is starting to change a little bit. but not yet.
