I've been looking at eBay for another cheap laptop to knock around but it
turn out new ones are cheaper, and better too, if you look around for a sale
combine with
rebates. $600US for a decent laptop after rebate is not unusual. Perfect for
a college student. Expect to go below $500 by the end of the year.
Who cares about resale value if a $4,000 laptop today will go under $400 in
about 4 years.

You can buy some moderately decent "budget laptops" brand new for $599.
For example, on labor day weekend, both Circuit City and Best Buy had
Toshiba A45's for $599, it's no speed demon (2.8 GHz Celeron), but it's
feature rich (40 gig, 256 megs, 15" LCD, DVD/CD-RW burner) and works
more than adequately.
