One is older than dirt, one is slightly younger than dirt?

Parallel ports shipped each bit of data down its own wire so it had 8 wires that it sent a single down simultaneously(in parallel) to send a single byte of data, a serial port sends all the bits of data down the same wire in rapid succession(in series) so serial ports got to be much narrower as you didnt need nearly as many pins, and as bus speeds increased you had much higher bandwidth. Firewire and USB are both successors to the old serial ports as they both transport their data in series.
