Icons disappear during software removal and new software installation

As a result of uninstalling McAfee and trying to install Kapersky, my desktop icons no longer open files or programs. In addition, some of them have disappeared. Moreover, Kapersky will not load even though its folder and files appeared in the My Programs folder. Please help.
