Help with custom levels

After having played all the TR games and many more than once I've decided to
try some of the custom levels.

I tried downloading the TRLE for Win XP file but couldn't get it to dl.
I've tried downloading some of the custom levels and have managed to mess
that up too.

Can someone explain in simple terms how to go about this ?

Thanks,

Ah ... simple ... let's see....

(1) You have to concentrate on getting TRLE and installing it. All else
is fruitless without it. Only the tomb4.exe it contains will run the
custom levels.

(2) Once installed, apply all official patches. This *is* simple. Just
follow the instructions.

(3) Copy the entire "trle" directory (and everything in it) to safe
place under a new name.

(4) either use the installer accompanying the user level (if it has one)
or follow the instructions in its "read me". If it has neither, try at
your own risk (which due to step 3 is very little).

(5) When done playing it, delete the entire directory of TRLE and copy a
fresh install from the backup you made in step 3.

(6) repeat 4 & 5 as necessary for a new user level. You can *not* have
two installed at the same time!

Just use the TR Level Manager and you can have as many maps installed as you
like.

I might have a custom level problem myself.

Downloaded one I'd like to play called "Flo-Der Temple Der Artemis"

Has three files and I guess I'm not putting them in the proper directories,
or perhaps download is corrupt.

Files are:

Artemis.tr4

German.dat

Script.dat

Any suggestions on where you're supposed to put them?

Ha! Yes that last statement could lead to a smart-aleck answer as to where
I might stick them, but seriously... :-D

Right now "German.dat" and "script.dat" are in the TRLE directory, while the
"artemis.tr4" file is in the "data" directory.

When I launch tr4.exe though, "Artemis" doesn't show up anywhere.

Any suggestions welcome then! :)

Those are the proper locations.

Do you have an English.dat? You might try renaming it.

I have no idea how (or in what order) it choses which language files for
the menus.

I would be willing to wager that if you pick one of the levels on
(English) list, you'll get one of the new levels (or a crash to desktop).

Kinda guessing here ... never used any other language files.

So obvious and easy now that someone else has suggested it!

thx!

As for the levels themselves, it looks like he or she wrote ten of them--
all named in German of course as are the menu selections.

Guess he did a pretty straight forward job. No date as to when it was
created, but I'm guessing it must be pretty old since he only uses the
textures & things in the original *.wad file or whatever ot's called.

Got through the first two levels being horribly out of practice with Lara,
but I ran into the shooting gallery puzzle from TRLR I think & haven't found
the pistole w/sight yet. Uzi's don't do the job, Lara falls to her death,
alt+F4.

When I'm finished though, maybe it will give me something to post to compete
with the spam! :)

<thoughtful pause>

Competing with spam...

Who was that Greek guy who had to keep rolling a boulder up hill only to
have it roll back down again? ;)

That's a real pain. Isn't there some way to have all the custom levels and/or
the originals all on the same level?

Well, maybe, but that is even more of a pain. First you'd have to have
the source to the .DAT files, so that you could merge them. Then the
real trouble starts because there are only so many slots for the names
of levels.

Basically, depending on how many levels you were trying to merge, you
may be able to, maybe not.

Someone (can't recall who right now), suggested the "level manager"
which lets you swap them out more easily.

But mostly its not that is not possible to merge them all together, its
that you don't have what you need to do it (the level source)!

In Spain, it's over 4 US dollars for a gallon so stop bitching and get
yourself a fuel efficient care or, better yet, do like I do, no car at all.

When I was in LA recently I learned that California started offering tax
breaks to vehicles over 1.5 tons (imperial) so suddenly everyone is buying
F150 pick-up trucks and similar. No wonder the US uses oil at the rate it
does.

Actually that is a federal tax break for small business that has been
around for several years!

It was *meant* for farm equipment! But I'm sure some wily Senator found
a way to reword it so it covered his armored limousine.

Easy for you to say. You don't live in a state that takes a full day to
drive...

....or about 10 miles away from work and well outside any transportation
authority's service area.
