Hello forum, I been wanting to build a computer for a while now but choosing which CPU confuses me so much. What exactly should i be looking for?, AMD or Intel. I basically want to build a gaming computer that will be able to run games with no problem, i recently got Battlefield bad company 2 and i noticed how slow my CPU that my computer has is, which is AMD athlon 64 x2 Dual core. I figured it was time to upgrade. I know not all motherboards support all CPU's but i would like to see you guy's opinions and get started form there. What I'm basically looking for is a CPU that will be able to run games perfectly for at least 2 years or so with out me having to buy a new computer. I was also thinking on staying on a $200-400 budget for the CPU only.

Thanks in advance!

If its a pure gaming build then getting a basic quad core will do good.. The AMD Athlon II X4 635 is a good CPU.. If you can afford a Phenom II X4 955 then It'll be great.. However, the GPU is more important when it comes to gaming..

what is your resolution?
is it goes higher than 1920!!!best gaming cpu in 200$ is 1055t and core i5-750!!!but core i5 is a little better than 1055t in gaming(6-10fps)and in another fileld like encoding and rendering and .... 1055t is lot better than i5 750!!!
1055t mainbord has more advantage: like sata 3 6gb/s and usb 3 and dual @ 16x CF.and if you play in lower resolution choose core i5-750
so my opinion is :
1920<resolution :1055t with a 5850 and asus crosshair iv formula!!!
1920<resolution :core i5-750 with gtx 470 and asus p55.

here is a review:
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1289/16/
amd phenom 965 has better performance here than 1055t because this game not support all 6core of cpu as you can see that!!!and you can easily over1055t to 4ghz with crosshair mobo and the result is like 965 and maybe higher(in future game will be more compatible with cpu and surely support's cpu core well)
one of the game that you mentioned BF 2 support cpu's core well
see here
http://www.guru3d.com/article/phenom-ii-x6-1055t-1090t-...
core i7 980x is like 1055t in stock speed!
in both site the tested sytem has 5870.but 5850 is better for bang for buck and you can overclock it to 5870 speed and if your system run a game slower in 1920 you can cf 5850!!!and you don't need anything just paly game and enjoy it for two years.

Just as a pointer. ;)

Well anyways, for just gaming without a whole new computer, i would have to agree with Emperus to say at MOST the phenom II x 955.

I dont think the phenom II x6 will be worth it for gaming as by the time games really start using 4 to 6 cores heavily I think we will be looking at the next micro architecture which will be 3 to 4 years from now. (after Intel Sandy bridge and AMD bulldozer that are coming later this year into early next year). Who knows how much more powerful they are than the current archs. (AMD k10 and intel Nehalem)

on 200$ you think 955 is better than 1055?when you overclock both of them they have same result.and in future 6core is better than 4core. JUST for 45$ pay over 955.anyway everyone has own idea!!!

Nice, I'm loving everyone's responses and all the information, I do play on 1920 x 1080 resolution. So you guy's think as right now the 955 is best as games don't use 6 cores just yet. However in the long run will the 1055 is better since games will require more power later at some point?. for $45 extra dollars it seems like 1055 is a better buy.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E168... For sure the 955 but if you got the budget( you do ) Id personally do the 1055. Just because its 2 more cores and you never know when they will come in handy. The more multi tasking the merrier! lol.

What is your current GPU?
What is your current Motherboard?

So your budget is $200-$400 for the CPU. What about motherboard and ram budget? Given your current CPU, it is very likely that you will need both. Also knowing your current GPU is quite important as well. If your current GPU is not up to the task, a new CPU will not help you much if at all.

Thanks guys, As for the motherboard i wanted to know the CPU i would want first (in this case i think i'll go with AMD Phenom II X6 1055T) so i could search for the appropriate Motherboards for it, i made another topic relating to that if you guy's also want to help me with that ( http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/forum2.php?config=tom.... ). As for the GPU i currently have Ge force GTX 9800, although i am planing to upgrade that also to a GTX 260 super clocked, i could get that for around $200, any better GPU's i could get for $200 that i need to know about? or should i get something more powerful for the CPU i want? Thanks!!

The GTX 460 is what you should be looking at.. As for the motherboard, i'd recommend getting the MSI 790FX-GD70 (sorry for posting it here)..

955 is better because each core of it is 3.2ghz but amd 1055t is 2.8.you can over 1055t to 3.2 - 3.5 on stcok air cooling.and if want more :http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-phenom...
here they reach to 4ghz with thermalight cooler!!!
for graphic card in 200$ i said 5830!!it's nice in price/performance.
don't buy geforce!!!it's very good graphic card but you cann't put two or more in mainbord!!amd 890fx does not support sli !!!you should buy nf 980.that it hasn't usb 3 and sata3 but if you buy amd 890fx you have CF @dual 16x,usb 3,sata 3 6GB/s,if this features are not important for you buy nf 980.
and another important thing Geforce GTX 4XX series and ATI 58XX series support directX11 and in future it is very important for you and game will be compatible with directx 11.so buy a card that support directx 11.
i said 5850!!but 5830 still is good in your resoultion.

Not true. 1055T leads very little when it wins, but lose immensely in cases where it loses(e.g. gaming).
Proof? http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/147?vs=109

P6T is X58 platform which is not compatible with 750 and there are budget USB3 & SATA6 P55 MB for 750.
In addition, gaming performance are more CPU dependent at low resolution such as 1680x1050. Hence,
750 has better gaming performance considering it leads a lot at low resolution. Besides, a nicely priced
GTX460 1GB is sufficient and very capable at 1920x1080 and it performs better, runs cooler than HD5770.

yes,you are right i made a mistake.asus P7P55D-E PRO.not true.core i5-750 beat to 1055t with noticeable difference:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/phenom-ii-x6-1055t-1090t-...
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1289/12/
and with overclocking amd has more advantage.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i7-875k-core-i...
look handbrake!!!!
here is farcry 2.that in low resulotion i7-980x beat 1055t.but in 1920 1055 is a little better than 980.for 1920 there is not difference between them!!!and it needs a good graphic card!!and for graphic card:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gami [...] 31939.html
not 1090t is 295$ and if you want to pay 300$.buy core i7-930 or core i7-875k or core i7-860.core i7-875k and 860 socket are lga 1156 and need p55
and i7-930 is 1366 and needs x58.

core i7 is the fastest processor on the planet.don't worry about the cloak speed as u have 7 cores each acting as a individual parallel processor so your work load gets divided into 7 parallel threads hence its equivalent of having 7 processors each @1.6-2.80 GHz.i would also suggest to go for a nvidia card with CUDA technology or Ati card with stream of course i am talking about the mobile series of these graphic cards it will be useful for your video editing and multimedia stuff.toughest video codec to decode is the avc h264 which can be done using a core 2 duo.then i don't have any reason why the i7core will not be sufficient.
