Productivity/Gaming Suggestions

Hey guys,

I'm a college student and I'm thinking about building my first computer. I have a budget of $700 dollars max (definitely preferably less). What I will be doing the most on my computer is productivity. Obviously, the usual web browsing, word processing, etc., but also compiling software, running IDEs, and running some large programs like Matlab and SolidWorks. I also want to be able to game (starcraft 2, COD) to a certain degree without lag, but I am fine with medium quality graphics.

My other goal is to build this computer to last. I want it to be upgradable, and I hope its parts (with some upgrades in the future, obviously) will last me for 3-4 years, at least until the end of college.

Processor: I would LIKE to get a corei5 or core i7, but I feel like an AMD Phenom II X4 will get me more power for the same cost. From what I hear, the difference is only apparent when heavily multi-threaded programs are running, right?

RAM: Obviously DDR3 RAM, how much is enough? I was thinking 6GB...to last me for a while. 4GB if costs are too high.

Graphics: need suggestion. maybe a GeForce 9800 GT. is there one that easily supports dual screen? thats more important to me than good gaming performance actually...

Mobo: I'm a little sketchy on what the we should consider here, besides obviously getting a cheap one that's compatible with everything. something like this one?

HDD: fast, but doesn't have to be waay spacious. i have a few 1TB externals lying around. maybe a 500GB Samsung SpinPoint?

Fans & Case& Power Supply: i don't plan on going nuts with overclocking or looking good, anything that will power the box fine, doesn't look too ugly, and not blow up (more like slow down..) my computer.

did i forget anything? suggestions are welcome :D thank you

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, with an under $700 budget an i5/i7 is not really an option. In fact, I couldn't get a X4 955 to fit in while maintaining the same level of quality. Here's the best I could do, it's just a tad over though, at $725.

CPU: ■AMD Phenom II X4 955 -$160-
MOBO: ■Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3 -$80-
RAM: ■G.Skill Ripjaws -$116-
GPU: ■Asus Radeon HD 5770 -$163-
HDD: ■Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB -$55-
PSU: ■SeaSonic S12II 520B -$70-
Case: ■Antec 300 Illusion -$60-
HSF: ■Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus -$27-

To answer your questions
1) Yes, that is correct for the most part.
2) 4GB is just right. You can only get 6GB (triple channel) with 1366 socket builds.
3) The 5770 is a better value.
4) It would be hard to fit a crossfire board into that budget, Asus and Gigabyte are the two best options.
5) Good choice.

To cut back further, your two best options would be dropping down to an Athlon II X4 or a HD 5750

Edit: Also, you may want to fill out the Build Advice form in my signature.

Jbakerlent picked a good build...but there are some options

jbakerlent's build

Gigabyte GA-770T $80.00
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) $116.00
Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower $60.00
SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V V2.3 $70.00
ASUS CuCore Series EAH5770 CuCore/2DI/1GD5 Radeon HD 5770 $153.00
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB $55.00
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 $27.00
Shipping charges for non-free shipping items $20.85
Total $741.85

See what you think of these two options:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.381927 $223.98 After 10.00 MIR
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) $115.00
Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower $60.00
SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V V2.3 $70.00
ASUS CuCore Series EAH5770 CuCore/2DI/1GD5 Radeon HD 5770 $153.00
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB $55.00
Shipping charges for non-free shipping items $19.64
Total $696.62
Same CPU and a very similar MOBO

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.390739 $538.97
ASUS CuCore Series EAH5770 CuCore/2DI/1GD5 Radeon HD 5770 $153.00
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB $55.00
Total (shipping not listed) $746.97

I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to offer options. The second option is more expensice than jbakerlent's build, but includes the new Six Core AMD 1055T processor. The MOBO is so new they don't have full details yet on ASUS' website.

Hope this helps...Please do some research on these two options when you have time to familiarize yourself with the components and don't forget to check the MOBO Qaulififed Vendor list for compatible memory. Some people don't think this is much a big deal but I am one who does.

If you're talking about a small budget and getting the best value - the answer is AMD.

The 955 BE (which is what I use) fits in nicely and give further value with it's unlocked multiplier, stays cool, stable.

A 5750 (also have one) or 5770 is a much better choice than old tech 9800.
