Hello,

My formerly functioning 500gb HD formatted in NTSF for Win 7, crapped on me tonight. Now it says it's RAW forat, even though win disk mgmt reports the partition as healthy and primary.

How do I open / fix this drive?

Befuddled

TestDisk, Data Recovery
TestDisk is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk Step By Step to recover lost partitions and repair damaged FAT/NTFS boot sector
Recover deleted files from NTFS partition

NOTE If seeked lost file are still missing, give PhotoRec a try. PhotoRec is a signature based file recovery utility and may be able to recover your data where other methods failed.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.

This may caused by the crash partition table, you need to fix it or use some recovery software.

Thank you for your response. Sometimes when I try things the drive shows on the list, of that current application, sometimes not. Yesterday when I started, even this morning, it showed up. Now it does not, though I did nothing that should have made any changes. I suppose I now need to search for a partition repair utility ...

When your data does not have backups, if they are important files, you should restore them first. Some of free tools that can cover your raw drive, you may try icare data free, or data recovery wizard, the later one is a paid program.

I have tried the first one free, got from giveawayoftheday. worked when my usb drive shows raw.

What you should do after got your files restored? Get it connectted to PC, go to disk management and then format your disk. And your drive would be brand new again.
