New System Under $700.00 - Any ideas to go a little cheaper?
Not a big gamer, so maybe I can cut cost on the video card.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: This week I hope

BUDGET RANGE: $500.00 - $600.00 After Rebates (Cheaper if possible)

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Watching movies, Surfing the Internet, FTP Server, little gaming.

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers. (I have a few hard-drives, but could use a new one.)
I typically use one drive to store just my operating system and nothing else. Also I was thinking of using windows XP 32, since I already have a copy.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com or any site that won't rip me off.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: USA

PARTS PREFERENCES: by brand or type Case with room for hard-drives, parts that will allow me to upgrade easily

OVERCLOCKING: Probably

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Don't really need, but would be nice if I decide to use it.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: Using a 32 inch VIZIO Flat screen

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: quiet pc is nice, room to expand and upgrade in the future.

Welcome to the forum. Could you please edit your post using the button in the bottom right of your current post to match the Build Advice format in my signature. From what I see though, it looks like a good start.

Athlon II X3 440 would be my first recommendation. 2nd would be check all components for possible combo deals before your purchase. 3rd would be pick up a hard drive, like the Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB, since you don't have on listed.

+1. Do you need the ability to crossfire? You could drop down to a cheaper motherboard - maybe a 770, as well as a cheaper power supply in the 500W range.

Right, some combo's should bring the cost down a little

MSI 870A-G54 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard & AMD Athlon II X3 435 CPU $165

Antec Three Hundred Case $62

OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W PSU & LITE-ON Black 24X DVD Drive $70

POWERCOLOR Radeon HD 5770 512MB & OCZ Black Edition 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM $240

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB HD $55

Totals to just under $600

If you dont need USB 3.0 and Sata 6.0 and want to go cheaper then pickup a AM3 ASRock M3A770DE motherboard instead for $60

Hmm cutting down on GPU isn't a good idea but what resolution you game on? +1 on General Moon - not HC gamer no need to pay premium for a CF board rather a 870 with bigger/better tech than any 700 series can offer looks about right ^^

Ok here is an update, I am not a big gamer really at all, I really don't need crossfire technology, but I figured if I go with the board I am going with and did decide to game then I would have the ability. I also will have the ability to upgrade in the future. Also I was think of staying with windowsXP 32 since I already have a copy, so I don't have to shell out another 130.00 for windows 7. I could do the student discount which is fine, that is 64.00. I see it used to be 30.00, but they must have raised the price. I also figured I would go with the 700W power supply in-case of future upgrades. I will be house 6 or 7 hard-drives, so I want to make sure I have adequate power for future growth. Also if I stick with the 32 bit operating system, I will be unable to use the full 4 gig of ram correct?

Feedback appreciated. Thanks

Why the Athlon II X3 440 over the X4?

This seems to be more like what I am looking for. Anyone else have any adds, or suggestions?
Thanks

Question about windows 7

If I use the student dicount and use "The Ultimate Steal Discount" Will this let you do a fresh install, or does it do upgrade your existing system? Anyone know?

Product Name Price

Electronic Download $64.95

1 Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64 Bit Disk Kit (What is this?)
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64 Bit Disk Kit
Suggested if you do not have a good broadband connection or would like to have the software available for future installation. $13.00

OK after searching on Google I found the following:

There is a way to create an image file dispite recieving this error we seem to be all recieving.

1. You will need to use an additional Microsoft command-line tool, called Oscdimg.
Details here
Download here

Download the .zip file and extract it. Then cut and paste the Oscdimg.exe file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory

2. You now need to start up your command prompt, which can be done by Start->Run then enter 'cmd' into the prompt. (Run as administrator if in Vista!)

3. You should now have the command prompt open, now you need to use the Oscdimg tool to create the image, by entering the following:
Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\<YOUR DIR> \expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\<YOUR DIR> \expandedSetup C:\<YOUR DIR> \Win7.iso

For example: Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\Users\James\Downloads\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\ Users\James\Downloads \expandedSetup C:\ Users\James\Downloads \Win7.iso

It will now scan the source tree then begin creating the image. PLEASE note: you must replace '<YOUR DIR> ' appropriatly as to where you have downloaded the files.

4. You should now have an image file, called Win7.iso, in the same directory.

5. You can now burn this .iso file to a blank DVD using appropriate software. I personally use PowerISO (You dont need the paid version to burn the image)

6. Viola! You have your not so shiney Windows 7 disk. Restart your computer and install away!
