How to install a western digital internal hard drive

Hello,
My WD Caviar keeps telling at the bottom of the monitor "preparing for automatic repair" loading files afterwards goes blank and freezes up, I have a Pentium 4 (old enough) Intel processor and I've been trying to install windows xp to no avail. I hope you can help me on this one
