But is it not the case that a new battery - even if original and
shrink-wrapped, _could_ be a lemon if it has sat on a shelf somewhere
for years ? Do LiON batteries not degrade with age even if unused ?
I need a new one for my IBM T20, but I'm a bit wary of ebay for this
reason, unless the manufacture date is stated ....

Lithium based battery systems are very stable, it's the most storage
stable of any battery chemistry. I won't say that they won't degrade,
but they can last the better part of a decade (I have some from 1997
that are still quite good, I'd say that they deliver 80% of their "new"
performance).

I had the same issue a couple of months ago. I purchased my new
battery from www.provantage.com and although NOT CHEAP, it was
considerably less than other non-ebay vendors.

I haven't bought from them, but this seems a good source:

What particular HP battery model are you looking for? I have a new
and unused one for a zt1000 available.
