Anyone know the procedure for getting at memory Slot 0 on zv series HP
Pavilion notebooks? They make it so that only Slot 1 is "user
accessible" i.e. under a cover with one screw. Apparently the Slot 0
is under the keyboard, additional disassembly is required to access
it. The only way to upgrade to the maximum capacity RAM is to have
access to both slots. HP calls Slot 0 the "base" or "system" RAM and
Slot 1 the "expansion" RAM.

Yessireee.
With the laptop in front of you as though you were going to use it
(the screen is upright), push the screen all the was over to a flat
position.
Using a small flat bladed screw driver inserted above the F12 key or
so, pry up the plastic panel. It will flex and then release. Slide
the loosened panel to the right and remove it.
You will now see three (3) phillips head screws holding the keyboard
in place. There is one on each upper edge and one in the middle.
Once removed you can then lift the back edge of the keyboard up and
swivel towards you. There are three tabs on the front edge of the
keyboard that you can then lift up and out. There is a connector to
the motherboard in the center-rear and it is easily unplugged to allow
you to set the keyboard aside.
The memory slot 0 will be clearly exposed and again, using a little
flat bladed screw driver, you can press the levers and remove the
SODIMM. Mine came with a 128MB SODIMM. I do not, however, know the
maximum amount of RAM you can install in each slot.
Good luck - its actually very easy once you figure out the "how to".

HP.com has the user manuals with disassembly instructions also. I
recently put in 512 MB in the "difficult" slot so when I get another 512
MB, I can just put it in the easy slot on the bottom of the laptop.

Bob,
Yeah, that's great, I really appreciate it. Turns out on the zv5000
series it's slightly different, three or four screws on the bottom of
the case have to be removed before prying up the cover, but the rest
of your procedure is exactly right.
I also found a service manual on HP that describes the process for
some pavilions, again it's a bit different for mine:
I believe max RAM on my model is 2GB, so I assume I can put a 1G
SODIMM in each of the two slots - looks like PC2700 333 MHz is the
right one, should know after UPS arrives tomorrow...
