I have two hard drives I want to RAID. From what I've read RAID only works when SATA is configured as IDE. However, if I do that won't I lose the benefits my SSD gets from being in AHCI? Is there a workaround this and is the tradeoff worth it?

More about : raid hard drives ahci

No, you generally have to enable RAID in the bios, which will not affect an SSD that is not part of an array. AHCI is a subset of RAID and with a single SSD RAID will be the same as using AHCI.

You could also just use software RAID in Windows disk management: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/36504/how-to-create-a-so...

^this. you can't set IDE in the BIOS and use raid. you have to actually set it to raid, which includes the AHCI commands
