Hard disk not responding

Hello,
i am receiving a strange problem.. whenever i play a game(fifa12, ac3), my harddisk stops responding .. the pecularity is that sometimes the gameplay is affected but not the audio and sometimes the audio is affected but not the game play.. the harddisk starts making a peculiar sound.. something like a fan spinning suddenly goes off and again starts spinning and so on.. i was thinking to reinstall windows but the same prob. occurs.. i m using an WD green 160GB hdd and the psu is a generic one.. what could be the reason

It's likely failing/getting old. Just judging by its capacity. I doubt that it's a software issue although you could try a defrag and see if that makes any difference.
