Update firmware over USB?

I have a Seagate ST31000333AS drive, and it no longer works through SATA connection (not recognized by BIOS). I can access the data through a USB enclosure, however I am just borrowing the enclosure from a friend, and would like to fix the drive so it works over SATA by updating the firmware. Is it possible to update the firmware over USB? It couldn't find the hard drive when i tried to do it with a CD.

Is there a way I could use this and do it?

More about update firmware
  1. plug it into SATA0 on your motherboard. it will be detected then.
  2. If you are able to access the data over USB but not over native SATA then you have a problem with your motherboard

It's not a problem with my motherboard, the 7200.11 series is known for faulty firmware. My motherboard loads other drives perfectly
