DVD Drive not reading CD

Hi there,
Recently when I tried to load up a CD drive into my computer, the CD was not recognised on Windows 7. Also I noticed the drive could not be detected in the BIOS of the system.
I also noticed that the drive recognised the disk for a moment, but it is never able to read or write to it.
Any help is much appreciated!![:D]( ":D")
