IBM's zEnterprise Mainframe - 96 5.2 GHz Cores

IBM is set to come out shortly with its new zEnterprise 196, a massive mainframe with 96 5.2 GHz cores and 3 TB of RAM.

I am *so* putting one of these monsters on my birthday wishlist. With something like this in the garage, maybe I'd finally get around to creating a malevolent Skynet-like AI to help me conquer the western hemisphere. Or just, y'know, putter around on Farmville.

  1. It is not designed for general-purpose computing. It has a reduced instruction set. It is not x86 compatible. Current AMD and intel processors will perform much faster for your tasks due to their instruction sets including SSE and MMX.
