i would like to know the difference between these two drives? it seems the RE4 is a bit more expensive than the blacks. why is this? i wan't to have maximum performance and lifespan. noise and power consumptions doesn't concern me. on newegg the 500GB RE4 has the best rating out of all the HDDs, so im guessing the RE4 is better, but why and how? thanks in advance.

The RE4 is an enterprise drive designed for RAID use. If you'll use a single drive, then the Black is as good.

The RE4 is almost identical to the Black except that it has 64MB of cache on all models. The Caviar Black's have 64 on only most of the SATA III models and the 2 TB SATA II model.

The firmware may be slightly different and the construction quality better but other than that there's very little difference.

thanks for the answers. il spend the extra 20$ on a 1TB black over a 500GB RE4.
