Hello All,

I am considering getting a Laptop. My hard requirement is Centrino 1.5
GHz. I am considering the following brand

IBM R series
HP Pavilion ZT3350US
Dell Inspiron 600m

The IBM R series comes with a choice of Pentium-M or Pentium-M 715
HP Pavilion ZT3350US comes with Pentium-M 705
Dell Inspiron 600m comes with a Pentium-M 715

What I don't understand it the difference between Pentium-M (no
number) and Pentium-M 715 and Pentium-M 705.

I am assuming its the architecture.

Pentium-M 705 is a 130nm
Pentium-M 715 is a 90nm
Pentium-M (no number), I don't know by assuming 130nm too

What are the differences? What is the advantage? Does it have any
affect on the speed? I mean all of the above is 1.5 anyway!

Thanks for you help

Intel currently has 2 Intel pentium M cores: Banias with 1 meg L2 cache,
larger die, uses more energy, gives off more heat and also is the older of
the two. The other is the Dothan core which has 2megs L2 cache, smaller die,
faster, cooler chip and newer. The 705 is based on the banias core and the
715 is based on the Dothan. They both run at 1.5Ghz. If only Pentium M is
indicated, its almost surely a banias. You would need to check the speed
though. Just for comparison speed wise, 1.5Ghz Dothan ~ 1.6Ghz Banias, but
don't forget the dothan has other features which set it apart from the
banias.

It does have more speed definitely!! The Newer Cpus have more Cache 2MB
instead of 1MB. So more information can be calculated in the same time. The
brannch prediction has been improved. Means if you are doing some the cpu
always try to guess what you are doing next. If you are right then it is
really speedy. If not all of the operations done must be cleared and
calculated again.
If you need more Speed take the newer Banias core. When you are only doing
office work it maybe i would be a good choice to take the older one. It
sounds odd but the smaller size of the banias is consuming more power if
used only for small applications. The currents which always run no matter
you are using the cpu or not got greater because of the smaller size. But
they do not matter if you are using full power. So if you need prolonged
batt-life with office docs stick to Dothan core(older one). If you need the
horsepower then a Banias is the way to go!!

You seem to be confusing the Dothan and Banias cores.

Oh I am sry- that is true:
The Banias is the older core in 130nm
The Dothan is the newer one which has 2MB and is in 90nm.
So the Dothan is the horsinf g power guy and
the Banias the battery saving one when only using docs.
thanx Thunder- i always have problems with that...
