Using an external hdd as storage and backup?

Is it possible to use an external hdd as storage and back up? I will be connecting to the external hdd though my router.

I do it every day but through a USB port.

Yes. Actually this is a good solution. The only other thing to think about is the physical location of your backup. If your office burns down, where is your backup? Maybe swapping out a couple of drives and take one home with you every few days so at least you have 2 copies in 2 different physical locations.
