Hey this is my first time posting here, I hope you guys can help me out. I'm starting my first pc build. The computer will be used mainly for media and games. I chose the AMD Phenom II X4 965 as my cpu because of price and performance and I don't know what motherboard to choose. Should it support DDR2 or DDR3? Does anyone know a good combination for this processor, and I have no idea what mo-board chip sets are.

Solution
I put my vote for the ASRock 870 Extreme3... It is the best board for the price to performance / features for an AM3 setup... IMO. It is basically a 890GX board without the on-board GPU.
Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

Now you only want a DDR3 MOBO, and AMD MOBOs are better suited for ATI{AMD} GPUs.

The best 'bang for the buck' is the ASRock 890FX DELUXE3 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157196

Side-by-Side http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007624%2050001944%20600007943&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=22|13-131-655^13-131-655-TS,13-131-363^13-131-363-TS,13-157-196^13-157-196-TS,13-157-198^13-157-198-TS

Q - What price range?
Q - What GPU?
Q - What features do you need? e.g. SSD, Firewire, etc

Soon as anyone mentions gaming then I don't recommend any MOBOs with onboard GPU/VGA and instead leave the otherwise shared bandwidth PCIe 'clean' for a discrete GPU.
