Question about adding more ram

Forum Motherboards & Memory : Memory Question about adding more ram

Word :    Username :

Hello everyone this is my first time here and my question is about my motherboard.First it's max ram it can take is 4gig and i have 4 slots and i have currently three one gig sticks on it.Now i know that each stick is 1024 total for 3068 so if i add another 1024 that=4072.So my question is if i go over my 4 gig limit does it hurt my motherboard or so it not matter?Because i plan on getting another stick.EDIT and the ram is ddr2 533mhz

Welcome, Newcomer. To answer your question, no, you won't harm your motherboard. The max support (recognition) is 4GB. This means that anything above the limit will not be recognized.

Be aware that occupying all DIMM slots on your motherboard may require you to increase your DRAM Voltage by about .1 V. This is done in the BIOS. Also if you're going to add another stick, it would be best if you installed identical DIMMs to reduce the risk of instability.

Just bear in mind that 32bit operating systems can't address more than 3.25GB of RAM

Due to the limitations of both your motherboard and operating system, the most RAM you'd be able to use would be 4GB. Although the max theoretical address is 4GB in a 32-bit OS, the typical limit is somewhere between 3.25-3.5 GB. When I was using a 32-bit XP OS, I was able to use 3.75GB.
