First desktop build

I want to build a computer based on either an i5 or an i7 processor. Priorities for this system are gaming > movies > gimp > general browsing. Looking for high performance graphics and sound quality with little-to-no computer sounds (quiet fans preferred, etc.). So far I've looked up some items and I am probably missing a few things from this list, I also need to add wireless capability. The computer is intended to play SC2 on ultra graphics and last for many years to come.

Processor ($200)
Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor

Operating System ($100)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM

Memory ($115)
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Hard Drive ($90)
Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive -Bare Drive

LCD Monitor ($220)
Acer V243HAJbd Black 24" 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor

Graphics card
Open to suggestions

Optical Drive ($29)
HP Black 24X DVD Multiformat DVD Writer

PSU ($110)

Keyboard ($80)
Logitech G110 Black USB Wired LED Backlighting Gaming Keyboard

Motherboard ($180)
ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

Case (woops had forgotten to post it before)
NZXT M59 - 001BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Total cost so far approximately $1184 +tax

More about first desktop build
  1. I think I just need a cooling system and a graphics card, please help :)
  2. Welcome to the forums!
Well, how much do you want to spend on your graphics card and your cooling system? We can then make some recommendations. Thanks!
  3. I have a few suggestions.

Faster ( speed and timings ) memory for cheaper:

The best case in that price range in my opinion:

A faster larger hard drive for the same price:
This drive has the newer 500GB platter design......the WD has 3 x 333GB platters, the Spinpoint has 2 x 500GB platters.....the denser the platter the faster the drive.

As to video card what kind of budget do you have? If you want high end look for an HD 5850 or even 5870.

You also will want an aftermarket CPU cooler if you plan to overclock. The Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus is a good one for a good price.

Edit: Sorry about that I linked you to newegg USA not Canada on those first 2. My recommendations still stand although the prices will of course be different.

  4. Willing to spend as much as required for a good graphics card able to play starcraft 2 on ultra; preferably the total cost of the computer will be about $1600 or less.
  5. With that 24in monitor I believe a HD 5850 would be the best bet for you then along with my other recomendations.
  6. ^+1: Agreed. The 5850 is your best option in your price range.
