APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Monday 5/24/10

BUDGET RANGE: $500-$900. I'd like to avoid spending more than $700, but am open to suggestions. From what I've read, to get the most out of WoW I shouldn't need to spend more than this.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: WoW with max settings and high FPS and the next expansion.

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: New Egg

PARTS PREFERENCES: I'm hoping for a fast, solid rig that will last at most a couple years.

OVERCLOCKING: Not Sure

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Not Sure

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1440x900 - (planning on upgrading to 1680x1050)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what a friend suggested with a grand total of $841. I'd like to spend a little less than this.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Easy, just change the graphics card to an HD 5770 which gives similar performance but for $50 less (not to mention DX 11, Eyefinity, lower power consumption).
I'd also get a SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB for $5 more, although it is your choice.

Other than the video card change, does everything else look ok? I've reviewed this rig a few times with people and they had bad things to say about the intel i3.
How does the rest stack up?

Here's a couple of benchmarks that might help you choose.

CPU benchmarks

GPU benchmarks
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,689378/WoW-Wrath-of-the-Lich-King-Benchmarks-with-Ati-and-Nvidia-graphics-cards/Practice/

GPU benchmarks, taken with an i7 920 @3.3 GHz, undemanding area and not ULTRA settings.

Remember that Cataclysm is going to be more graphic intensive then WotLK, that Ultra shadows is a waste of graphic resources and that the GPU benchmarks were taken from a very undemanding area in Fort Wildevar, (not Dalaran, raids or BGs)

That said i think that the 5770 is a very good choice for around $150.

What about upcoming games like Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3? Would this system handle them?

I'm mainly concerned about spending this much money and not seeing any improvement in gameplay. I'm currently running an eMachines e5274 with an intel dual core processor, 2GB DDR2, and an intel graphics medica accelerator 950.

I guarantee you're going to see huge improvements off that setup... SCII will be fine on that setup also. I'd definitely suggest going for that 900 mark and change cards from 5770 (Great performance for price value) to steppin up the ladder and gettin' that 300-400 5850-5870 (pricey card, but most likely will be ready when DIII comes out and Cataclysm)

You can try to "future proof" all you want, but unless you're spending 3-4k on an insane gaming rig, then you might want to save your money and make it a good 600 dollar rig and in another 5 years upgrade to another 600 dollar rig when the rest of the performance goes down in price =). Just my 2 cents.

Because it's equal or faster in certain games to the GTX260 and it's cheaper, less heat, and requires less power.

But I doubt the 5770 will be able to handle wow at all full or starcraft 2, diablo 3 easily. Certainly on mid-high settings but not at full max.

And if you wanted that start looking more at the 5850s or 5870s. ($300-400)
