ATI Radeon HD 5850 1680x1050 wasted?

First I apologize for my English but I am Italian.
I own a monitor SyncMaster T220 (22 "max resolution 1680x1050) and I was wondering if the ATI Radeon HD5850 was not wasted on those resolutions. The HD5770 graphics card would be enough to play up even the most demanding games with that kind of monitors, or at least the difference between the two cards you would notice anyway (considering that there are over 100 € difference between the two VGA).
I would agree to buy the HD5770 now and then, maybe in 2 years to change a monitor with Full HD and then upgrade the video card. Thank you.

hmmm...good question

Me, personally, would shoot for the 5850.

1. Because of speed and price/performance ratio

2. Ability to max out most games with AA at x4 with little performance hit

3. Future proofing for more demanding games to come

Thanks

Think of it like this...

HD5770 = $150
HD5850 = $300
1920x1080 Monitor = $200

You buy an HD5770 now, upgrade to a 1920x1080 monitor later, but then you need a new card. You can get a CF mobo ($100), or you could get an HD5850 ($300).
Total with CF + Another HD5770 ($150x2) + ($200) + ($100) = $600. $650 going for an HD5850

You can get an HD5850 right now, and when you get another monitor, you'll be fine.
Total with HD5850 + Monitor Later ($300) + ($200) = $500.

I have a 5850 and T220 and find that in some games I can get the frame rates to drop below 60 when on max settings. I would recommend the 5850 over the 5770. As others have said, futureproofing is the best reason for the upgrade.

I have a 5850 and game at 1680 X 1050 and anyone who tells you that the 5850 is overkill must not first-hand experience with one. Yes, MOST games games can be maxed out at that resolution and maintain 60 FPS, but already some cannot. To me I think a 5850 is the sweetspot for GPUs right now.

i can't max at 60fps nfs:shift and bc2 at 1680x1050 so i can only imagine the 5770 to be slower

I have the 5850 on a 1680x1050 and I agree with the above posters, get this GPU and you won't need to buy another for a few years unless you want to go crossfire. In Crysis I'm playing with good framerates on High and 4x AA but on Ultra, the performance dips and mostly objects load a lot closer so it takes away from the immersion to see twigs and rocks magically appear withing 15 feet.

On the other hand, Dirt 2 plays with Ultra graphics at an easy 50+ FPS

Keep dreaming.... on the 5870 you'd have a chance at that.

Sucks.

I'm prolly goingto be building a new i7 build, and I ''ll get a 4870X2 for Trifire with it, Then I can max it...

all maxed 8xaa
at 1680x1050

i get 50-55 fps average

sometimes goes below 40

45 fps on bc2 feels like 18 fps in crysis

at least for me (it's not smooth anymore)

but only rarely goes below 50

I ran the BFBC2 Beta with everything max besides shadows (medium) and AA off it ran a constant 50+

My build is a 260 GTX, Intel Q8400, 3 gigs of ram

IMO, the framerate is limited by physics processes on the CPU...it even *recommends* a quad core

A 4870 will run it smoothly im almost positive. Just dont cut on HBAO or whatever its called(its a framerate killer)

Cool. I thnk it's cuase Crysis has special motion blur, so even at 20 frames it looks like 60 frames (To me)
