My computer has died I thhink, can you help?

Hello,
My computer boots up with a black screen & a few wors t the top talking about the ethernet?

How far can it go?
If U can see something written, then, can U get in bios? Can U see loading screen? Boot from safe mode? (F8 at startup), do U see a black screen with a cursor (try ALT CTRL DEL and open explorer)
Do U have, or can U borrow a xp cd?
Do U hear any beeps?

We need to know these, so we can help U.
