Well i finally snagged a gigabyte gtx 470(i think it was the last one caused i checked and its sold out), it should be shipping tomorrow. But i want to know if it was wise of me to purchase it? If i could get a 5870 for $360-370 i would not even think of the gtx 470. But i wasn't really feeling the 5850 and i heard alot of bad things about ati's drivers.

Also im upgrading from a 8400gs lol so going for a 5850 would have been a good upgrade as well

The gtx 470 was a good choice for your system. The good thing about buying it is that it can only get better as drivers mature and performance will increase slightly with that. If I were in your situation I wouldn't have thought twice about buying it. I would rather have a 470 than a 5870 if the prices were the same.

Don't let buyer's remorse creep in to your new video card CELEBRATION ! :)
Get ready to turn up the eye candy, this is where Fermi really pulls away, when the AA is cranked up. Check out the sli review at HC. Yes thats a cherry picked stat, but telling.

I say enjoy your card. You did the research and decided to get the 480.

As with everything in life, there are pros and cons to everything and you will get that here in terms of which card to get or which one you should have gotten.

plus the improved performance on AA and AF, in tessellated games (there will be!) the GTX 400s will pull ahead.

I think it has something to do with that the Fermi architecture does not really have a fixed tessellation unit, instead they are being done by the "polymorph" part of the shader processors. ok basically, it's scalable performance.

In the Cypress case, all 5000s have a fixed tesselation unit regardless of whether it was a 5870 or 5670. Performance is only linked to that unit.

I had the same issue as you with a 480.
I bought it yesterday and spent my night (once more) browsing tests and benchs.
I decided to cancel my order as, if one day I decide to go for SLI, the power consumption is really bad.
Both 470s and 480s perform great on SLI but I think that I might regret it in long term so did withdraw.
It performs great as a single card, but still it is not as good as a 5970 as a single card for not that much difference and more power over time, and upgrading later on in SLI is not a very good idea imo...
If anyone is looking for a zotac 480 on ebuyer it should be back on sale!
(PS I think ill go for a 5970 when aftermarkets coolers will allow it to fit in a fractal case)

edit: my current system is a 4870 512MB Xfire
