How to fix iomega external hard drive

The hard external iomega disk is not reconoced and there is a "E:\is not accesible The request could not perform because of an I/O device error".
How may I fix this problem?
I appretiate in advance any answer.

Removing the drive from the external case, and connecting it directly to a sata port is usually a good start. If you are still having issues you could try booting a machine to a Ubuntu live cd, and accessing the machine through that. If none of that makes any sense I would suggest taking it to a local repair center and see if they can save any of the data on the drive.
