Dvd's wont play on pc with wihdows xp

When i load a dvd light on player blinks and I hear it moving inside. Then nothing happens light stops blinking, sound stops, then nothing. Have downloaded all recommended codecs: also, VLC media player (most recommended), MPlayer and Media player classic. none work. Closest is VLC opens,doesn't start, Open media window>disc>dvd>play yields

One suggestion I read is to open directly from the Video_TS folder. It looks as though you are not alone with that problem.

what is the video ts folder and howdo i get to it (COMPUTER DUMMIE HERE)

If the drive letter of your DVD drive is D: then the path to the VIDEO_TS folder is this, D:\VIDEO_TS. There are at least two folders on a DVD AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. If you click on the DVD drive in Windows Explorer you should see those folders.
