Not on that plate you dont,
16/4 crossfire is pointless, look for a mobo that has two 16x lanes, probably running at 8/8 once you crossfire will suit you best

x4 would drop that 5850's performance to that of a 5770's

It would, but that 4x slot would severely handicap your setup so that in about half the games it wouldn't be much faster than just having a single card. Crossfire does not like a mixed number of PCI-E lanes and thus you will get worse performance with a 16x/4x PCI-E 2.0 configuration than an 8x/8x PCI-E 1.0 configuration even though 4x PCI-E 2.0 is the same bandwidth as 8x PCI-E 1.0.

Basically in Some games it wouldn't make a difference because some games don't need as much bandwidth, but in the majority of games it's going to be alot slower than two 5850s should be and in some cases it may even act worse than just having a single card.
