I'm an old school PC guy who has probably built or upgraded at least 50 boxes in the past. I'd like to build a mid-range gaming box for my son, however, I haven't really kept up-to-date on the latest & greatest the past couple of years (which is an eternity in this business). I've been nosing around, reading reviews, coming up-to-speed, etc... but I thought I'd check here as well and see if anyone has a "recipe" they'd recommend.
I'd like to stick around $1,500 (box only) but have something the plays today's games pretty well. I feel confident that I can fill in the blanks for the supporting components (power supply, HD, etc...) but what I don't really have a feel for anymore is what MB/CPU/Video combination would best fit that "good performance but reasonable price" slot. Maybe an i7 860 2.8 with dual Radeon 5850 1GB? Or would I be better off with a lower CPU and a little better video? Any bare bones systems out there that fit that general description? Other thoughts/advice? Thanks.
