I'm an old school PC guy who has probably built or upgraded at least 50 boxes in the past. I'd like to build a mid-range gaming box for my son, however, I haven't really kept up-to-date on the latest & greatest the past couple of years (which is an eternity in this business). I've been nosing around, reading reviews, coming up-to-speed, etc... but I thought I'd check here as well and see if anyone has a "recipe" they'd recommend.

I'd like to stick around $1,500 (box only) but have something the plays today's games pretty well. I feel confident that I can fill in the blanks for the supporting components (power supply, HD, etc...) but what I don't really have a feel for anymore is what MB/CPU/Video combination would best fit that "good performance but reasonable price" slot. Maybe an i7 860 2.8 with dual Radeon 5850 1GB? Or would I be better off with a lower CPU and a little better video? Any bare bones systems out there that fit that general description? Other thoughts/advice? Thanks.

For that budget, the most performance would be from an i5-750 and HD5970. Gigabyte and Asus both make solid motherboards, I would recommend this one,

Throw in 4GB of G.Skill Ripjaw 1600 CL 7/8, and a Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD, and you are set. The popular midrange case right now is the CoolerMaster HAF922, and I would pair it with a Corsair 750TX PSU.

Lot's of people building $1,500 systems today :o

Here's a full build that'll last you till next gen consoles come out, 2014 earliest.

i5-750 $195

ASUS P7P55D-E LGA and 750TX $255 w/ $20 MIR
not a xfire board, but with a 5970, don't need xfire, nor will the 1156 really benefit from more than that anyway.

Ripjaw DDR3 1600 7-8-7-24 $110

HAF 922 and 7200.12 $120

5970 $700

Lite on $20

CM Hyper 212 Plus $29.13

Total $1429.04 before shipping and $20 MIR
Shipping is only $10 to NYC (almost everything is free ship).

Edit: You should fill out the form in the sticky, link in my sig for us to fine tune a build for you.
