I have a 5850 hd gpu.I just noticed recently that while playing videos on vlc the gpu usage goes between 4 to 12% (It never stays the same) and similarly with videos playing on flash player. Is this normal. Also, even when I am not playing any videos the gpu usage hovers between 0 to 6%.

Your GPU is being offloaded some video work from the CPU, so it's normal, the latest Flash player 10.1 offloads some work off of the CPU on to a compatible graphics card like yours, so it's perfectly normal.

Either way your display is connected to your graphics card, by that logic some signals from your PC have to go through the graphics card, creating the small activity.
