Forum CPU & Components : Power Supplies, Cases & Mods [Solved] Longevity of HAF 932 and PS

Hey folks,

I'm planning a long-overdue ground-up build, but will need another 6 months or so to save up enough coin to complete it. In the meantime, a case and PS I've been eyeing went on sale on new-egg. I'd like to jump on it, but want to make sure I won't regret it 6 months later.

Has anyone heard any rumblings of upcoming industry/standards changes that might make an HAF 932 obsolete? I'm looking for a case and power supply platform to last me another 8 years (that's how long my current case/PS have lasted for me), and I'm thinking I can't go wrong with a case that moves such a tremendous volume of air, with a flexible interior layout, and room for a 3x top-mounted radiator. I took a similar approach with my current Antec case back in 2002 (searched for max airflow available at the time) and haven't been disappointed but thought I'd ask.

Similarly, what about PSU standard changes? Anyone see anything coming along the lines of the ATX 20- to 24- pin change a few years back that will make me wish I'd waited a few months on a new PS?

Thanks a lot!

As for cases, a good one will last a lifetime. However, one minor change that is happening is that more and more cases are providing USB 3 support, and probably in the near future USB 3 case pins are going to show up. And PSUs are following the "green" trend, with more and more Gold rated PSUs coming up on the market. Also, with the new AMD and Intel sockets coming out next year, you can expect some ATX and EPS board specification revisions. Oh and the case that will "replace" the HAF 932 is the HAF X.

The HAF X has two USB 3.0 ports on the front of the case. If you were looking for a "future proof" case, I'd definitely take a look at it. I have a 932 and absolutely love it, however i wish i had the X.

ATX isnt going away as far as I can see, and the HAF 932 has wonderful cooling capabilities, USB3 shouldn't be an issue as you could always get a hub or mod it, so the HAF should last as long as you plan to keep it.

PSU-wise it gets a bit fuzzier, nothing major should happen in say the next 8 years as they're not gonna switch to 24V for power, but little specifications might change. Good thing is that companies are caring more about power consumption now more than before, so as long as you get a beefy PSU that has an ample 12V rail, you'll be fine IMO, except a few adapters here and there.

I'd looked at the HAF X and loved it (I particularly like the added physical support for GPU cards to take the stress off the MB connection). But shied away from the additional cost over the HAF 932. Didn't notice it had USB 3.0 ports up front though... Interesting.

I figured USB 3.0 in the back would suffice, but realistically the USB 3.0 devices should be the ones you want to transfer large amounts of data to very quickly, such as thumb-drives, portable external drives, etc. That would make front ports more convenient. Maybe I'll spring for that one afterall.

Any word on what specifically may be changing for new MB connectors?

Thanks guys.

Well, 8-pins would probably take over 4-pin for the CPU power, but I don't see anything that's gonna happen to the 24-pin main power. Most boards get more than enough power from it, and GPUs now rely on 6/8-pins. With the exception of maybe a 10-pin GPU connector and further decreasing the requirements for the +3.3/+5 rail and perhaps fewer molexes, nothing drastic should happen as least in the next 5-8 years.
