I am planning to install SSD in my new HP ML350 Server, running SBS2011 with around 20 user connected to this server, mainly to access exchange and files server. I am thinking to put OS, databases & paging file on the separate drive and the rest of the data on SAS hard drive to improve the performance. My decision to use Samsung 830 series SSD because of the better controller for this purpose. I will add 4-5 SSD in the following either configuration:
RAID 10 - 4x 128GB Samsung 830 for OS, paging file, exchange and database
RAID 1 - 2x 128GB Samsung 830 for OS
RAID 1 - 2x 128GB Samsung 830 for exchange and database
And separate paging drive
1x 128GB Samsung 830
I am thinking the second configuration will be safer for my data, as the SSD drive not pooling together and longer to wear out, but I want to ask other people opinion?
Is it worthwhile having separate SSD drive for windows paging file? My consideration to separates the paging drive to pro long SSD life, since windows paging file constantly read/write.
How long do you think the safe time to replace SSD before failure, I know this is would be hard to answer since it all depending on the amount of data transfer every day (which I don’t know).
And lastly, will it be better getting larger SSD under RAID 1 (2x 256GB or 2x 512GB) instead multiple smaller drives?
All the data will be backup daily, with the exception of OS drive weekly.
