5850 vs 5870 for crysis 2

Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards 5850 vs 5870 for crysis 2

Word :    Username :

Hey, I'm trying to decide whether to get the 5850 or the 5870 for when crysis 2 comes out... I was thinking that for the extra $100 the 5870 wasn't that much better, just higher clock speeds which i could achieve via overclock, and a couple more processors... what're your opinions?

you are correct, plus Crysis 2 will be a console port. It should not be as demanding as the Crysis/Warhead unless its poorly optimized.

so... 5850? I don't want to spend $600 to xfire it though... if i do want to xfire, then for the price i could get a 5970... would that be worth it?

what is your CPU?
what is your monitor's native resolution?
are you running XP, Vista or 7?

It will not be a console port from what I've heard. They are developing the console versions and the PC version at the same time, so it will be two completely separate versions of the game.

so they are developing two separate game engines?? Maybe they are but from a business stand point that would be silly.

My guess (game is not out so we cant judge), the engine is designed to play on console and will be optimized to play on the PC like Far Cry 2, Fall Out 3, FEAR2, etc.,

what do you mean? i've got a 5770 in my rig right now and i want to upgrade... i even said that i wasn't upgrading my monitor because i don't care about res, i care about textures, physics, effects, etc

Reply to Martin 71

LOL that res is already low for your gpu

you can max out the game in that res

a 5850 can max games in 1980X1050 get it if you upgrade your moniter
5870 is for pure gaming at high Res

The only reason to buy a high end card is for monitors with high resolution because they are needed to push the extra pixels otherwise its just overkill/waste of money.

Are you not getting good FPS with your card now?

ebay is god's gift for junk collectors and sellers

P.S. I have a old DELL E521 case and mobo collecting dust. Sold the PSU for like $40 on ebay, may try the rest of the system.

lol, no man, i'm selling the gpu to the guy... the mobo works, but has some problems, so i'm not entirely sure what i'm gonna do with it. the integrated sound is crap, and whenever i play, games buzz and crackle.

So, why not wait until the game comes out and see what top performance vs dollar is for the game then? It's kind of silly to upgrade prior to a release, especially when there is no real shortage of cards.

^ We all know NV will dominate Crysis 2.

(The 350$ GTX 470 is faster than the average of the 5850 and the 5870)

truthfully, this post makes no sense to me... i understand what bottleneck and over kill mean... but the message you quoted doesn't make any sense to your post... is my cpu bottlenecking? gpu? ram? this makes no sense. I'm not downgrading to a 5750... i want to upgrade.

I know... it seems like I should do just fine at my current res... can anyone point me to benchmarks for the 5770 on 1024x768 with crysis on very high? I can't find anything... I'm getting a phenom 2 x4 965, and then I should be able to play alright, right?

A 5770 could even play Doom at that res, it should be laughing at Crysis?
