5850 vs 5870 for crysis 2

Hey, I'm trying to decide whether to get the 5850 or the 5870 for when crysis 2 comes out... I was thinking that for the extra $100 the 5870 wasn't that much better, just higher clock speeds which i could achieve via overclock, and a couple more processors... what're your opinions?

  1. you are correct, plus Crysis 2 will be a console port. It should not be as demanding as the Crysis/Warhead unless its poorly optimized.
  2. so... 5850? I don't want to spend $600 to xfire it though... if i do want to xfire, then for the price i could get a 5970... would that be worth it?
  3. what is your CPU?
what is your monitor's native resolution?
are you running XP, Vista or 7?
  4. Right...
    AMD Athlon 64 x2 6400+ @3.2ghz
native res 1024x768 not buying a new monitor... i love crt's
    win 7 64bit
  5. get an ATI 5750 and save your money for future motherboard & CPU upgrades...or just mail the money to me

5770 on the high end.......your res is low

It will not be a console port from what I've heard. They are developing the console versions and the PC version at the same time, so it will be two completely separate versions of the game.

so they are developing two separate game engines?? Maybe they are but from a business stand point that would be silly.

My guess (game is not out so we cant judge), the engine is designed to play on console and will be optimized to play on the PC like Far Cry 2, Fall Out 3, FEAR2, etc.,

what do you mean? i've got a 5770 in my rig right now and i want to upgrade... i even said that i wasn't upgrading my monitor because i don't care about res, i care about textures, physics, effects, etc
  10. The only reason to buy a high end card is for monitors with high resolution because they are needed to push the extra pixels otherwise its just overkill/waste of money.

Are you not getting good FPS with your card now?
  11. LOL that res is already low for your gpu

you can max out the game in that res

a 5850 can max games in 1980X1050 get it if you upgrade your moniter
5870 is for pure gaming at high Res
  12. no, im getting like 20-25 fps with everything on veryhigh/high in crysis with my 5770 and no aa af, 1024x768
  13. or... i could wait for unlimited detail to come out....
  14. ^ In what, Crysis 1986555?
  15. ya really... but check this out, it's really cool! if crysis supported this, you could play on any card.
    http://unlimiteddetailtechnology.com/description.html
  16. I think there is something wrong with you're card.
  17. that's what i'm saying... im getting a new mobo, because i want to see if the new integrated sound, and pci-e 2.0 will help... i'm getting sound stutters too
  18. ^Better off winth new build, or just keeping the mobo.

    Can you RMA?
  19. why would i get a new build? and the mobo is an hp P.O.S mobo... one of the ones that comes pre-built with the system... i can't rma but i got a guy that wants to buy it.
  20. ^ You're gonna sell him a old dead HP mobo?

Where do you find these people?

ebay is god's gift for junk collectors and sellers

P.S. I have a old DELL E521 case and mobo collecting dust. Sold the PSU for like $40 on ebay, may try the rest of the system.
  22. lol, no man, i'm selling the gpu to the guy... the mobo works, but has some problems, so i'm not entirely sure what i'm gonna do with it. the integrated sound is crap, and whenever i play, games buzz and crackle.

    I know, I've checked around Ebay, i'm eying a 300$ GTX 295.

    Gof ro it.

I've sold hundreds of Prebuilt mobos for 20-100$ eqach.

    Ebay: Techsales21
  24. sweet! o got an offer on the 5770... so what do you all think? will i end up getting the 5850 and wish i got the next step up like i did with the 5770? or will i be happy?
  25. Yes Sir. (Dats the one)

I'll give ya a 100$ for the 5770 if no one buy sit.
  26. So, why not wait until the game comes out and see what top performance vs dollar is for the game then? It's kind of silly to upgrade prior to a release, especially when there is no real shortage of cards.
  27. ^ We all know NV will dominate Crysis 2.

(THe way it's meant to be payed, and Optimiztion For even Warhead alredy)
  28. yes, but nvidia has a crappy price/performance ratio
  29. Not realy.

(The 350$ GTX 470 is faster than the average of the 5850 and the 5870)

im selling it for $140 but if i get no sale, i'll sell for $125
  31. Good Deal, But I'm looking for steal.
  32. wow... ok
  33. so you have some driver issues...thats about it
or you have a pentium 4
  34. ^ Or a new AMD Hexcore.

(So firmware problems cuasing them to run slower than Core 2 Duos at games)

truthfully, this post makes no sense to me... i understand what bottleneck and over kill mean... but the message you quoted doesn't make any sense to your post... is my cpu bottlenecking? gpu? ram? this makes no sense. I'm not downgrading to a 5750... i want to upgrade.
  37. Just ignore him, everybody else does.

    i quoted the wrong message.

did not read that you had a 5770 , my bad

but still your cpu is bad and will bottleneck the 5850
  39. ^ Not realy.

    And only at that res.
  40. ya... i'm planning on a phenom x4 soon...
  41. You need all that hardware at that res?
  42. I know... it seems like I should do just fine at my current res... can anyone point me to benchmarks for the 5770 on 1024x768 with crysis on very high? I can't find anything... I'm getting a phenom 2 x4 965, and then I should be able to play alright, right?
  43. A 5770 could even play Doom at that res, it should be laughing at Crysis?
