Frequent need for format

I got a new hard drive as a replacement. I dont know for sure if it was new or refurbished. The thing is that very often it needs formating or i cant access it. I connect it to my pc using an external power supply bought from China and a skarkoon sata to esata cable. Could it be the cable's or suply's fault? I will also mention that the drive is not always recognized immediatly and needs a few restarts but that may be the PC's esata port fault.

Put it inside the PC it's probably the dock

I put both my drives inside a pc but continued to use the chinese sata to usb and sharkoon sata to esata cable. Now, when i exchange cables between the drives they both need formating. So one cable is bad. Which one?
