Sound driver installed but no sound playing

Last night; my headphones randomly stopped working and all sounds stopped except my friends voices in Skype. I was really tired at the time; so I turned off my computer and went to bed. I turned it back on this morning; and there's no sound at all, and my microphone isn't working. I tried installing the driver I was missing (Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller ) and it installed properly; but no sound is playing and the driver is not showing up under the hardware/audio tab. Any help?

why dnt u ry to go to device manager and see if there is esclamation mark which is (!)

There is; under "Other Devises", but when i try to update them; it says it cant find the proper files.

What shows up in the Hardware tab in Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices? Are you using the front or rear sockets and have you checked that the plugs are pushed in all the way home? Sorry there's more questions than answers but sound problems are notoriously hard to fix.

ATI function driver for high definition audio
SB Audigy
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media conrol devices
legacy video capture devices
video codecs
And it's plugged into the back; all the way in. It also has a usb port it uses for the mic; and that isnt working either.
