EDIT NOTE: The choice I am making is now between the nVidia GTX470 and the ATi Radeon HD5870
since I was duly informed that the GTX295 is much older.

Hello everyone,

I am now looking to buy a new graphics card to top up and complete my new rig (built about 3 weeks ago). Thanks to some birthday money I have a budget of up to £300 or in USD ~450$.

Now here is the important/relevant specs of my rig hardware:

PSU: 750W Antec New TruePower modular 80 plus bronze
Mobo: Asus P7P55D-E Pro
CPU: Intel Core i7 860 @ 4.1GHz (overclocked)
Case Thermaltake Element S

I am going to go with a single card set up for now (upgrading from my eVGA 8800GTS 640MB woop hello DX11) and my only other limitation is I cannot really fit any GPU cards that are bigger than 11.2" (only if the power connector butts are on the side of it since they take up more space).

Now I have seen that the 11.1" HD5870 has been fitted with fair ease by other users in my case and I know that the nVidia GTX295 fits in since its 10.5" THE CHOICE IS NOW GTX470. Their price tags are also very similar

I am trying to make sense of all the data to compare the two and I am sure I have enough power to run either one of them.

The question is which would be better between the two of them in your opinion?

Thank you for your help and time.
Edo

GTX295 is older architecture/model. The HD5870 should be compared to the GTX4XX series now. Thus, go for the HD5870.

Seeing as you said DX11, that means the GTX295 is out. You should look at either the 5870 or the GTX470. I'd probably get the 5870, but it might depend on the games you like to play.

I vote for HD5870 .

GTX 295 is old tech and doesn't supports DX11.

Yes, agreed with the above. There's no reason to grab a GTX295 at this point in time.

Ah thanks for the info I assumed the GTX295 was DX11.

And I didn't realise the GTX470 was also within the same price range as the HD5870.

So if the choice was now between a GTX470 and the HD5870 what do are your opinions on it now?

The 5870 wins on that one. Unless all you want is to watch the Unigene demo, go for the 5870.

It does seem like it has a lot more raw power when comparing the stats even to the GTX480.

And it also consumes a lot less power too.

I am pretty convinced the HD5870 most definitely the better buy.
Thanks for your expertise :)

Yes except the 5870 is *++OLD TECH compared to the GTX 4XX , the next wave of DX11 games might come packed full of tesselation. Which happens to be a MAIN feature of the new DX.
*exaggerations included.

Between a GTX470 and a 5870? I'd go for the 5870 in that lineup. The GTX 470 is about equivalent to a 5850 OCed a bit. It also produced alot of heat and uses as much power as a 5970. If you were looking at a 5870 vs a GTX480 I could go either way. The GTX480 outperforms the 5870, but that is not always the only thing to look at.

So I vote 5870.

5870 all the way. It beats it performance wise, and it is architechturally much more efficient.

No, not at all. The GTX295 has been superceded by the GTX470 so it was old tech. The 5870 is still the latest from ATI and which Nvidia is trying to beat with the GTX470 but failed.
